![]() ![]() I mean, what’s the plan here Ben? You gonna keep your six kids in the woods forever, until you die and they’re middle-aged? Unless they meet another family of societal drop-outs, are they not to experience love (or even lust) and have families of their own? Because if you release them into the conventional world you so despise, they’ll be eaten alive, as they’ve had NO preparation for the kind of life.Īs for the children’s mother, Leslie: She’s bipolar and suicidal, and she’s in the hospital, and she might not be coming back. Ross seems to be painting a portrait of Utopia, but Ben is so intense and the kids are trained to be such robotic parrots, blurting out memorized answers in a way clearly intended to please their father and only rarely questioning his authority, it feels more like the children are being imprisoned in the wilderness and robbed of the opportunity to get to know the world, to make friends, to develop a first crush, to fall in love. Oh yeah, and each eventually must learn how to hunt and kill deer and other prey. Ben’s six children are home-schooled - well, woods-schooled, seeing as how they live deep in the Pacific Northwest - and their father is a master instructor, teaching them to read and appreciate the classics, learn multiple languages, play instruments and engage in enlightened conversation about socialism and capitalism and the exploitation of the common man around the ol’ fire pit at night. Mortensen’s Ben is a handsome, brilliant, resourceful and loving father - but he’s also as didactic and single-minded as a boot camp sergeant or even a budding cult leader. Highly recommended a day with Captain Fantastic.Shree Crooks as Zaja (from left), Viggo Mortensen as Ben, Samantha Isler as Kielyr, Nicholas Hamilton as Rellian, Annalise Basso as Vespyr, George MacKay as Bodevan, and Charlie Shotwell as Nai, in Matt Ross’ “Captain Fantastic.” | Cathy Kanavy / Bleecker Street Headed back to the mainland tired and sunburnt but well worth it to have such an amazing day. I sat in the water and It circled around me very tame though would be scary it we weren't warned about it. Had another swim in the crystal clear water before boarding the boat for our final destination we went snorkelling again and were joined by the largest Trevaly I have ever seen. Lovely island feast served on traditional island plates Cf serenaded us while we ate and he even sung Happy Birthday to me as it was my 50th. CF came back and got us for our Island lunch. ![]() Takes your breath away the scenery too perfect to be true. Walked the whole way around Maina felt like being on a deserted Island. CF dropped us off at Maina while they went over to Honeymoon Island to prepare our lunch. First we went to One Foot Island then we went onto snorkel on our way to Maina Island. Captain Fantastic was great with his storytelling and singing we even brought the DVD. There was only the 3 of us so it felt like a private charter. We were supposed to go with another company luckily they were booked out otherwise we would of missed out on going with Kia Orana Cruises. ![]() However, my experience with Captain Fantastic, was FANTASTIC!!! :) MUST GO ![]() Those boats just looked like regular fishing boats. In comparisons to the other cruises I saw on the waters they looked over crowded and had no shade. The boat was also in full condition it had a nice cover over the boat so you can sit in the shade. So I walked in (as i was pretty much sun burnt hehe) to find Captain Fantastic preparing our lunch therefore these people had to leave our beautiful hut, to go back into the heat and wait for their hosts (poor thing). There were other people on the island, that was with another cruise and they had walked into a beautiful hut. His lunch that he prepared on honeymoon island was so delicious and unique. On our way out, he was very helpful and considerate as my mum and I have never snorkelled before. When we met up with him we were greated and taken away in less than 30 seconds. We were just lucky to find out about him, as we were eating lunch at the takeaway store right next door. My mum and I had a glorious time with Captain Fantastic. ![]()
